One may travel through this city on the way to visit the impressive Jain temples in Palitana (50km southwest). Not many foreigners make it here, but the town is nice. The Takhteswar Temple is located on a hill overlooking the city, from where there is a good view.

Information
There are two areas in town, the old and the new. The railway station is at the far end of the old section, and the bus stand is in the new part of town, 2km away. The cheaper hotels are located in the old part of town, away from the bus stand.
The Bank of India, Amba Chowk, near the Hotel Vrindavan, and the State Bank of Saurashtra, Amba Chowk, change money.

Where to Stay—Lower
Vrindavan Hotel (518-928), in the bazaar area, is an older place with clean rooms for Rs 200/250. Dorm beds are Rs 60. 24-hour checkout. A good value.
Shital Guest House (428-360), Amber Chowk, Mali Tekra, in the bazaar area, has basic rooms with common bath for Rs 100/150 and with bath for Rs 175. The rooms with balconies are the best. 9 am checkout. A good budget place.
Hotel Mini (24415), Station Rd, near the railway station, has clean rooms with bath for Rs 175/225. It is a friendly, quiet place. Some rooms don’t have windows.

Where to Stay—Middle
Hotel Apollo (425-251), opposite the bus stand, has clean rooms with TV for Rs 550/700 and Rs 700/900 with A/C. It has a good restaurant and exchange facilities.
Jubilee Hotel (421-740), near the taxi stand, has comfortable rooms with A/C for Rs 700/900.
Blue Hill Hotel (426-951; fax 427-313), near the taxi stand, is a comfortable, modern place with rooms with A/C for Rs 1000/1450. It has two good vegetarian restaurants.
Nilambag Palace Hotel (424-241; fax 428-072), on the road to Ahmedabad, west of the bus stand, has spacious luxury rooms for Rs 2400/3400. It is a former maharaja’s palace. It has a pool, tennis court, antique furniture, and a garden.

Where to Eat
Blue Hill Hotel has two very good vegetarian restaurants, one serving Gujarati thalis and the other Indian, Continental, and Chinese cuisine.
Mahavi Lodge, near the railway station, serves good thalis.
Nilambag Palace Hotel has good food (main dish Rs 90).
Ashok Juice Centre, Kala Nala, serves juices and ice cream.

Travel
Air Indian Airlines (426-503; fax 426-503; Airport 443-262), near the Ganga Jalia Tank, has flights to Mumbai (1 daily, $80). An auto-rickshaw to the airport costs about Rs 75.

Train There are two trains a day to Ahmedabad (300km) and an overnight train to Rajkot. There are three trains daily to Palitana (2 hr, 50km). Ahmedabad Shetrunji Exp #9909 (5.40 am, 5½ hr), Bhavnagar-Ahmedabad Exp #9935 (3.15 pm, 5½ hr).

Bus There are state buses to Palitana (1½ hr, hourly), Ahmedabad, Una for Diu (6 hr, hourly), Diu (6½ hr, one daily), Junagadh, Bhuj, Veraval, Surat (8 hr, four daily), Mumbai, and Vadodara (6 hr, ten daily), and other places in the state.
Punjab Travels (424-582), opposite the Galaxy Cinema, operates buses to Ahmedabad (every half-hour). Bonny Travels (29178), in the Madhav Darshan Complex, has buses to Ahmedabad and Diu. You can get a sleeper bus to some places. .
