Porbandar is on the seashore between Dwarka and Somnath. It is said to have been the home of Sudama Brahman, who studied with Krishna in the Ashram of Sandipani Muni. Porbandar used to be called Sudama Puri, and there is a Sudama Temple in the center of town.

Almost every Indian knows this town as the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi. Porbandar is a hassle-free place that does not see many foreign tourists.

You can change money at the State Bank of India, MG Rd; and the Bank of Baroda, MG Rd, under the Hotel Flamingo.

Kirti Mandir
The house where Mahatma Gandhi was born in October 1869, is a popular tourist spot in the middle of town. Gandhi’s family left the house in 1881. There is a swastika in the house marking his birth spot. There is a photo exhibit and a small bookshop in the building next door.

Where to Stay
Rajkamal Guest House (242-674), MG Rd, has basic rooms with bath for Rs 75/100.
Nilam Guest House (244-503), has basic rooms for Rs 150 (bucket hot water). Many of the rooms don’t have external windows.
Toran Tourist Bungalow,(241-821) Chowpatty, has a good location by the sea. The large, clean rooms are Rs 250 and Rs 400 with A/C. Good dorm beds are Rs 50.
New Oceanic Hotel (242-217; fax same), Chowpatty, next to the beach, is a small modern place with rooms for Rs 500 and Rs 700 with A/C.
Shree Kandhlikrupa Guest House (246-655), near the railway station, has good rooms with bath for Rs 200/300 and Rs 500 with A/C.
Sheetal Hotel, opposite the GPO, has rooms with hot water for Rs 250 and Rs 450 with A/C. Many of the rooms do not have windows, so it is best to see a few rooms before selecting one.
Moon (244-172), ST Rd, is a new place with clean rooms for Rs 300/350 and Rs 600/700 with A/C.
Hotel Flamingo (247-123), MG Rd, is a clean place with a good manager. It is a decent value with clean rooms with bath for Rs 200 and Rs 450 for a fancy A/C room. Some rooms don’t have windows.
Vaibhav Guest House (247-000), MG Rd, has rooms for Rs 175/250 and Rs 450/500 with A/C. The sign is in Gujarati.
Kuber (247-172; fax 23888), off ST Rd, is the best place in town.

Where to Eat
Aadarsh Restaurant, MG Rd, is a good, inexpensive vegetarian place. Recommended.
Swagat, MG Rd, is a popular place with very good Punjabi and South Indian vegetarian food. It is the best place in town.
Hotel Flamingo, MG Rd, has a good A/C restaurant serving South Indian, Chinese, and Punjabi cuisine (Rs 50 main dish).

Travel
Gujarati Airways (contact Thankey’s Tours (21128), MG Rd, near the main square) has daily flights to Mumbai. By auto-rickshaw it costs Rs 40 to go the 4km to the airport.
The Saurashtra Express #9216 (8 pm, 25 hr) goes to Mumbai via Rajkot (4½ hr), Ahmedabad (10 hr), and Vadodara (14 hr). A morning local train goes to Rajkot and Jamnagar.
The long distance bus stand is about a fifteen-minute walk from MG Rd. There are regular buses to Dwarka (2 hr), Veraval (3 hr), Junagadh (2 hr), Diu (5 hr), and Rajkot (3½ hr).
