Where to Eat—Colaba
Leopold Cafe, Colaba Causeway, is by far the most popular place in Mumbai with foreign tourists. They serve good Indian, Chinese, and Continental food.
Cafe Mondegar, a block away on Colaba Causeway, is also popular with budget travelers. They serve Indian, Continental, and Western breakfasts.
Café de la Plaz, 2nd floor of Metra Plaza, Colaba Causeway, has an outside terrace serving sandwiches, snacks, and juice. From here there is a good view of what is happening below.
Piccadilly Restaurant, a few blocks south of Leopold Café on Colaba Causeway, has inexpensive Western breakfasts.
Three Flights Up, 1st floor, 34 Chatrapati Shivaji Marg, is a high-class place with a large, all-you-can-eat buffet lunch (12 to 3 pm). They also have individual items. It is converted into a disco at night.
Kamats Restaurant, Navrose Mansion, Tardeo Rd, Colaba area, has good, cheap, vegetarian Indian food, ice cream, and snacks. A thali costs Rs 30.
Woodside Inn (287-5752), opposite Regal Cinema, Woodhouse Rd, is a good vegetarian place with Indian food and pizza.
Kailash Parbat, 1st Pasta Lane, has good sweets and pure vegetarian snacks.
Majestic Restaurant, Colaba Causeway, serves cheap thali meals.
Cafe de la Plaz, 2nd floor of Metro Plaza, Colaba Causeway, is an outdoor terrace place serving juices and sandwiches.
Tanjore, Taj Mahal Hotel, is an excellent, high-class place, with thalis ranging from Rs 250 to Rs 600. There is Indian music on Tues, Thurs, and Sat nights. Appropriate attire expected.

Where to Eat—Fort Area
Suvidha, 204 Dr D Naoroji Rd, a few blocks south of Victoria Station, has really good, cheap food including great South Indian food and snacks. It can be busy at lunchtime.
Chetana, 34 K Dubash Marg, behind the Prince of Wales Museum, is an excellent vegetarian place, but is not cheap. It has a special thali for Rs 145, good individual preparations, and snacks outside of lunch and dinner times. Recommended.
Khyber (267-3227), 145 MG Rd, Fort, behind the Prince of Wales Museum, is a well-decorated, popular restaurant with good Mughlai cuisine (main dish Rs 125). It is a fancy place.
Copper Chimney, 18 K Dubash Marg, behind the Prince of Wales Museum, is a popular, high-class place serving good North Indian food. Reservations suggested.
Wayside Inn, K Dubash Marg, has good British Raj food. It is a popular place but closes at 7 pm. Main dish about Rs 75.
Trishna (265-9644), 7 Rope Walk Lane, is a popular place.
The Café Samovar, in the Jehangir Art Gallery, serves snacks and small meals. Open from 11 am to 7 pm.
Mandarin, Dhanraj Mahal, Shivaji Maharaj Marg, Apollo Bunder, has good Chinese food.
Ling’s Pavilion, 19/21 KC College House Building, near the Taj Mahal Hotel, is a good, pleasant Chinese place.

Where to Eat—Juhu Beach
The ISKCON Temple has a first-class restaurant serving an excellent all-you-can-eat buffet-style thali for Rs 175 during lunch and dinner. Open 12.30 to 3 pm and 7 to 10 pm At other times, it serves snacks, including pizza and veggie-burgers. There is a new menu every day. There is also a popular maha-prasada booth at the temple selling good sweets and snacks.
Little Italy (617-8815), Hotel Atlantic, 18-B Juhu Tara Rd, near Maneckji Cooper School, is an excellent Italian vegetarian restaurant. The head cook is from Italy. It sells good pizza (starting at Rs 100), a wide selection of pasta, and good salads. Recommended.
Domino’s Pizza (616-2222), Hotel Beach Garden, Juhu Tara Rd, is part of the American chain.
Natural Ice Cream, behind the ISKCON Temple, sells many different varieties of homemade ice cream. They say they use only cow’s milk. Recommended.
Woodland’s Garden Cafe, Juhu Scheme, Vaikuntlal Mehta Rd, near Juhu Beach, is a South Indian place but also serves pizza and tasty thalis. It has some of the best food. Recommended.

Downtown
The Pizzeria, on the corner of Veer Nariman Rd and Marine Dr, has fair pizzas and pasta. It is a nice place to sit, with a view of Marine Dr and the sea. Pizza starts at Rs 100 for a small one.
Gaylords, Veer Nariman Rd, is a popular, high-priced place.

Downtown—Vegetarian
Samrat, Prem Court, J Tata Road, near Churchgate Station, is a recommended veg place that serves good Gujarati food and other items. It has good service and is one of the best restaurants in India.
Purohits, Vir Nariman Road, two blocks from Churchgate Station, is one of the most famous places in town, serving reasonably priced thalis (Rs 45) during lunch and dinner and snacks at other times.
Satkar, in the Indian Express Building next to Churchgate Station, is a crowded lunch place. It has good veg food at some of the lowest prices in Mumbai.
Sri Thakar Bhojanalay (Sri Thakar Club) (201-1232), 31 Dadisheth Chagiyari Lane, has excellent vegetarian Gujarati and Rajasthani style thalis for around Rs 90. In is on the first floor. It is a popular place with the locals and has quick service.
Near Satkar is the Suryodaya store, a small supermarket with a good selection of food items.
If you are getting a train from Central Station and need a place to eat, you can go to the Shagun Restaurant, which is to your right across the street when you walk out of the station.

Chowpatty Beach & Malabar Hill
New Yorker, across from Chowpatty Beach, has good pizza, Mexican food, and baked potatoes. The nachos are very good, with real, American-tasting cheese. It is the best place in town for Western food.
Sukhsagar, by Chowpatty Beach, is a road-stand with good idlis and a juice bar.
Revival, Chowpatty Sea Face, above the London Pub, is a good but high-priced place. It has many imaginative preparations, but it probably best to stick to the Indian items.
Thackers (205-3641), 116/118 First Marine St, by Marine Lines railway station, is a famous, well-established, high-class place with excellent thalis (Rs 175) and individual Indian and Continental preparations. Recommended.
China Garden (363-0811), Crossroad Shopping Centre, is a popular, first-class Chinese place. A main prep costs about Rs 200. Reservations suggested.
