Planning
Your Trip
If you are short on time, it is best to plan your trip in advance. India
is a big country and the distances between places can be great. While
traveling, it is a good idea to take a break every seven to ten days
and just relax. You can catch up on your rest and laundry, which can
be a problem if you are always traveling. Otherwise you can really tire
yourself out.
It
is best not to have too tight a schedule, as things do not usually go
on schedule in India.
Visas
Residents of most countries need a visa to enter India. The normal tourist
visa is valid for six months. You can also get a 15-day, three-month,
one-year, or even five-year tourist visa. Normally you will be given
a six months tourist visa, which begins the day you get the visa, from
the date of issue—not the date you enter India. If you have a
six-month visa and enter India three months after you got your visa,
your visa is good for only three more months. If you enter India one
day after you get your visa it will be good for the full six months.
A
15-day or three-month visa starts on the day you enter India. You must
enter India within 30 days, if you have a three-month visa. In the USA,
they have started to issue tourist visas for longer than six months.
A
tourist visa is usually multiple entry, but you should specifically
ask to have a multiple entry visa when you apply, as it is no extra
cost. You never know if you will want to go to Nepal or some other country.
In
New York, you can go to the office in the morning to submit your application
and pick up your visa in the afternoon, after 4 pm. You must submit
two passport photos of yourself with your application form.
You
can also get a visa by mail. It is best to send in for your visa at
least three weeks in advance. If you do not receive your visa within
two and a half weeks, call up the Indian Visa Office and ask if there
is a problem. There might be one, and there is a good chance they will
not contact you if there is.
If
you apply for a visa outside of your home country, it can take up to
two weeks. This is because they have to fax your name back to your home
country, supposedly to check up on you.
The price of the visa varies from country to country and also changes
regularly. If you are from the USA, you should expect to pay more than
people from other countries.
