Photography

Google

The best cameras you can buy now have automatic focus and automatic light meters, which enable even an amateur to take perfect pictures. I met an excellent professional photographer in Varanasi who used an automatic camera. I asked him how much he used it on automatic, and he told me 90% of the time. He said if he did it manually, he would miss many good pictures.
It is a good idea to have a camera case, extra batteries, a cleaning brush, lens cleaning paper, polarizing filter, and a skylight filter to keep the lens from being scratched.

A lead bag to carry film protects your film from X-ray machines in the airports. It is not a good idea to put your film in your check-in luggage as more than likely it will be subjected to a large X-ray dose, which can completely ruin the film. Lens caps can easily get lost, so it is a good idea to bring a spare one.

A professional photographer told me that because of the harshness of the sun in India you usually get your best pictures in the early morning and late afternoon. I was advised by another professional photographer to use a polarizing filter when taking pictures in direct sunlight in the middle of the day to kill the glare of the sun. I also read this in a photography book.

Many times the film developing places are not very good in India. It is best to process your film in the big cities. Color slides can only be developed in Delhi or Mumbai. Mahattas and Kinsey Bros, both in Connaught Place, New Delhi, are good for film developing. Mitter Bedi Studio, by the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai, does one of the best jobs at processing film.

Photographing Restrictions
You are not allowed to take pictures of anything remotely military such as railway stations, airports, bridges, dams, border crossings, radio stations, and of course military ships or bases. I know someone who was seen by an army officer taking a picture of his friend, with a bridge in the background near the Chinese border. He was immediately detained until he could convince the army officials that he was not a spy, which took hours.

Very seldom will you be allowed to take pictures inside temples, especially of the deities. The priest may get violent if you try to do so and may grab the camera out of your hand. In many forts and palaces, and some temples, a camera fee is charged. It is usually Rs 25 for a still camera and Rs 50 for a video camera.

Most people actually enjoy having their picture taken. Some people, especially women and sadhus, do not want their photos taken and may even get violent if you take a picture of them without permission.

These are places that can develop slide film beside in Delhi. Bourne & Shepherd (033 288-1658) 141 SN Banerjee, Calcutta.Mazda Professional Imaging (022 300-4001), D-10, VK Industrial Estate, K Khadye Marg (near Jacob’s Circle), Mumbai. The Image Park (044 827-6383), Shop No 2, Gee Gee Plaza, 1 Wheatcrofts Rd, Chennai.

Permission is often needed to use a video camera or a tripod for photography at archaeological sites. Advance permission can be obtained from the office of the Director General, The Archaeological Survey of India, Janpath, by the National Museum in New Delhi. At some places, such as the Taj Mahal, there may be a charge of Rs 500 or more to use a video camera.

Film
Color film is available in the big cities and the tourist places, and it is relatively cheap. If possible you should bring whatever film you need with you. A general rule is to bring twice the amount of film that you think you will need. When purchasing film in India, make sure you check the sell-by date, to confirm that it is not old stock. It is best to buy as much film as you need in the big cities, as in the small towns it can be expensive and is often past the sell-by date. Heat increases the decay of film. After taking your photos, you should try to get them developed as soon as possible, especially in the summer. Used film is more sensitive than unused film.

The X-ray machines do not usually ruin your film the first few times, but the effect is cumulative and can cause fogging after about the fifth time. X-rays do not harm processed film, nor will the archway metal-detectors or hand-held devices harm film. So a good idea is to carry some film in your pocket.

If you are taking most of your pictures outside, in bright sunlight, it is best to use 100-speed film. If you will take some pictures with not such good light, you should use 200-speed film. 200-speed film is a good overall film. In bad light, you need 400 speed film or faster.
