WORD
OF ADVICE Pay the fair price for the hotel room and in this
way you will not be obligated to take their camel safari. They have
to make a profit somewhere. If the hotel in which you are staying is
nice and the management pressures you to take a camel safari and you
don’t want to go, just act like you will go, but you haven’t
yet decided when.
Where
to Stay—In Fort
Most of the hotels in the fort are old havelis converted into hotels.
Therefore most of the rooms in the buildings are different and it pays
to look at a few rooms before choosing one. You will usually be shown
a normal room first and if you take it they are happy. If you do not
like the first room they will then say why don’t you see another
room and that room will usually be a little better. Rickshaws are technically
not allowed to enter the fort (many times they do go up), so there is
a good chance you will have to carry your bags up the fairly steep hill.
As there is a wide range of hotels, if you have heavy bags you may want
to carry them to the courtyard of the fort and one person could watch
the bags and the other could go look at the rooms. I highly recommend
staying in the fort rather than down in the town.
Old Laxmi Niwas is an old building with rooms with common bath for Rs
75 to Rs 200. It has a lot of atmosphere. The Hotel Laxmi Niwas Annex
(52758) is a newly built place with good rooms with bath ranging from
Rs 250/300 to Rs 500/600. Some rooms have very good views.
Desert Guest House (51555) is a small place near the Jain temples, with
rooms with common bath for Rs 110. It is an old building and some rooms
have an excellent view.
Hotel Castle Paying Guest House (52988) is a small, family-run place
with rooms ranging from Rs 200 to Rs 350.
The popular 15-room Deepak Rest House (52665) has rooms with common
bath for Rs 75/100 and double rooms with bath ranging from Rs 125 to
Rs 400. Room No 9 has its own balcony. You can sleep on the roof for
Rs 40. There are some great views from the roof. Hot water.
Hotel Simla (53061) is a really good place with rooms for Rs 75/120
to Rs 350/500.
Star Moon Hotel (52910), next door, has rooms with common bath for Rs
70/90. Room 11 is the best room. It has an attached bath and a good
view.
The well-managed Hotel Paradise (52674), across the main square when
you enter the fort, is a good place built around a courtyard in an old
haveli. There is an excellent view from the roof. Most of the rooms
are totally different, so it pays to see a few. Rooms range from Rs
200 for a room with common bath with a small window giving you a good
view to Rs 700 for a decent size, well-decorated room with bath that
has a great view of the surrounding area. Other double rooms without
a view are Rs 400 to Rs 500. You can sleep in the hall or roof for Rs
60. They organize good, reasonably priced camel safaris and will definitely
want you to go on one. Recommended.
Hotel Shreenath Palace (52907), near the Jain temples, is an old family-run
haveli with rooms for Rs 450/500. The rooms have common baths with bucket
showers. It is a nice place.
A little down the road is the family-run Hotel Suraj (53023), an old
haveli with wall paintings and well-decorated rooms. The five rooms
with bath range in value from Rs 450 to Rs 650. You can get good veg
meals here during lunch and dinner.
Hotel Jaisal Castle (52362; fax 52101), in the southwest corner of the
fort, is a good place to stay with some rooms having double views of
the surrounding area. It is a restored old haveli and most of the rooms
are different, so you should ask to see an assortment of rooms. Rooms
are Rs 750 to Rs 1050. The staff may not be very friendly if you do
not take a camel safari.
Killa Bhawan Resort (51204) has comfortable, small rooms with common
bath for Rs 1100.
Lower near Amar Sagar Gate
There are some good hotels along two roads that run parallel to each
other north of the Trio Restaurant.
Hotel Renuka (52757; fax 51414), Chainpura Street, a five-minute walk
from the private bus stand, has good clean rooms for Rs 100 to Rs 200.
Dorm beds are Rs 50. Some of the rooms have really good views of the
fort and the surrounding area.
Hotel Swastika (52483), Chainpura Street, has clean rooms with common
bath for Rs 100/150 and with bath for Rs 150/200. It is a popular place
and has a great view from the roof. Bucket hot water in the morning.
Hotel Pleasure (52323), Chainpura St, is a small place with clean rooms
with common bath for Rs 80/130. Some of the rooms are small and do not
have windows.
Ringo Guest House (53027), Chainpura St, has a room with common bath
for Rs 80, if you take one of their safaris. There are two very good
rooms on the roof with bath and hot water for Rs 150. I heard they can
be very pushy about going on a camel safari.
Hotel Peacock (52287), across the street, has basic rooms with common
bath for Rs 70/90.
Hotel Pushkar Palace (40817) has rooms with common bath for Rs 125 and
with bath for Rs 175.
Hotel Anurag (50276) has rooms for Rs 100/125. If you take one of their
safaris you can get the room cheaper.
Where to Stay—Lower in Town
Across from the entrance of the fort are several budget hotels.
Hotel Fort View (52214) has rooms for Rs 125/150 and dorm beds for Rs
40. There is a great view of the fort from the restaurant. Hot water
in a bucket. There are a couple of rooms, which have good views of the
fort and hot water for Rs 300.
Hotel Flamingo, next door, is a popular place with cheap rooms.
Hotel Shree Giriraj Palace (52268), nearby, has clean rooms with common
bath for Rs 90/125 and Rs 125/150 with bath. A large double is Rs 300.
Dorm beds are Rs 50.
Hotel Jag Palace (50438), located down a side street near Patwon Haveli,
has decent rooms with common bath for Rs 150/200 and with bath and hot
water for Rs 225/250. The rooms do not have outside windows.
Hotel Rajdhani (52746), across the street, has modern clean rooms with
bath and hot water for Rs 200/300. It has a rooftop vegetarian restaurant,
which has a good view of the fort.
In the south of town there are a few cheap hotels.
Hotel Padam Niwas (53330) has rooms with common bath for Rs 60/70.
Hotel Tourist (52484), across the street, is family-run and has basic
rooms with baths for Rs 80/100.
Hotel Pooja (52608), down the road from Gadi Sagar Pol, is an old haveli,
which has really basic rooms with common bath for Rs 90/125 and rooms
with bath are Rs 150.
Maru Palace (50713; fax 52259), near the Fort Gate, has clean rooms
with bath and hot water for Rs 100 and Rs 350 with an air-cooler. They
have free call-back facility. It is a well-managed place. They arrange
good camel safaris. Some rooms have a good view of the fort and it has
a rooftop restaurant. Michelle, who manages the place with her husband
is a helpful, friendly person.
Where to Stay—Middle
RTDC Moomal (52392; fax 52545), Amar Sagar Rd, located on its own grounds
about half a km from town, has typical tourist bungalow type rooms for
Rs 500/600 and good deluxe A/C rooms for Rs 900/1050. It is in a quiet
area. There are off season discounts between April and August.
Hotel Vrinda Palace (51625), located near a corner of the fort on Shiv
Marg, has fairly good rooms for Rs 800.
The well-managed Hotel Jaisal Palace (52717), down a side road near
Amar Sagar Gate, has clean modern rooms with hot water for Rs 700/900.
It has a good vegetarian restaurant on the roof, which has good views
of the fort. It is a little hard to find.
Hotel Nachana Haveli (52110; fax 52778), near Amar Sagar Gate, is a
well-decorated old haveli that has clean rooms with bath and air-cooling
for Rs 650/750 to Rs 1050/1250. Bathtubs in deluxe rooms.
Hotel Priya (52755; fax 52545), Ramgarh Road, between Amar Sagar Gate
and the Tourist Bungalow, has over-priced rooms for Rs 700/900. The
area looks like a cement jungle.
Where to Stay—High
Jawahar Niwas Palace (52208; fax 52259), located just outside town near
the tourist bungalow, is a sandstone former palace that is about 100
years old. It is located by itself and is a nice place with rooms for
Rs 1200/1400. It is usually booked by tour groups months in advance
during the season, so you should book this place at least three months
in advance.
Mandir Palace (52788), near Amar Sagar Gate, is the old city palace,
some of which is now a hotel. The rooms are well-decorated, especially
room 11. Normal rooms with bath are Rs 800/1000. The rooms downstairs
by the reception desk for Rs 400 are dark and dreary. You may be shown
one of these rooms first, but the other rooms are much nicer.
The well-managed Narayan Niwas Palace (52408; fax: 52101), located on
the edge of town past Patwon ki Haveli, has modern newly built room
for Rs 1700/2500 and deluxe rooms for Rs 1900/2700. The lobby is a far-out
redesigned old camel stable. It is a good place.
Directly next door is the much older Hotel Shri Narayan Villas (52283),
which has comfortable, clean rooms for Rs 750/900 and A/C rooms for
Rs 1000/1100. Many of the rooms are different, so you should ask to
see several rooms.
Gorbandh Palace (53111; fax 52749), 2½ km west of town, is a
luxury place made of traditional sandstone. It has first-class, clean
rooms starting at Rs 1500/1800. It has a good restaurant and an excellent
pool. They can arrange jeep and camel safaris.
Heritage Inn (52769; fax 51638), nearby, has rooms for Rs 1300/1900.
Hotel Dhola Maru (52863; fax 52761) is a good place with rooms for Rs
1300/1900. It has a haveli type design and Rajasthani-style furniture.
Hemmatgarh Palace (02992), 3km from town, is a well-designed place with
A/C rooms for Rs 1500/2500. It has good views of the city at sunset.
