Where to Eat—Sudder St Area
Blue Sky Cafe, 3 Sudder St, (middle of Sudder St) is one of the most popular places with travelers in the area. It serves good breakfasts, snacks, Chinese, and Western food. Recommended.
Also popular with travelers is the nearby Zurich’s.
Taj Continental, near Stuart Lane, has cheap, good food.
Khalsa Restaurant, down the side road across from the Salvation Army Guest House, is a popular place, which serves good, cheap meals. It is one of the best cheap places in the Sudder St area.
Zaranj Restaurant, Sudder St, next to the Indian Museum, has good food and is popular. Main dishes cost around Rs 150. It has a small waterfall flowing through it.
Fairlawn Hotel, Sudder St, has British-style set lunches and dinners. They post the set meal at the reception. It is Rs 125 for lunch and Rs 150 for dinner. It is a good value.
Cafe 48, Mirza Ghalib St, two blocks south of Sudder St, serves good vegetarian thalis and other good vegetarian food. Main dishes are Rs 20 to 30.
Kathleen’s, 12 Mirza Ghalib St, serves baked goods and Indian food.
Waldorf Restaurant, Mirza Ghalib St, serves Thai and Indian food.
How Hua, 10 Mirza Ghalib St, south of Sudder St, has very good Chinese food. Main dishes cost Rs 50 to 80. The service is very good.
Nahoum & Sons, F20 Stall in New Market, is a Jewish bakery, which serves bagels and cream cheese.
Delhi Durbar, 13 JL Nehru Lane, is a popular place for Indian, Continental, and Chinese food.
The Ming Court at the Oberoi Grand, JL Nehru Rd, is a good Chinese place. The Moghul Room at the Oberoi Grand has excellent Mughlai food. La Potisserie is an excellent French restaurant.
Indra Mahal, JL Nehru Rd, near the Grand Hotel, serves good Bengali sweets and snacks.

Park Street
Guptas, 18B Park St, on the corner of Mirza Ghalib St, is a very good place serving Indian food.
Trinca’s Gulnar Restaurant, near the Park Hotel, Park St, has very good, but expensive food.
Kwality Restaurant, 17 Park St, next to the Park Hotel, serves Indian and Continental food. Main dishes cost around Rs 50–80. The service is good here, and the restaurant is popular. Closed Thursday.
Moulin Rouge, 31 Park St, serves good Indian and Continental food.
Peter Cat (249–8841), 18 Park St, serves good Indian and Continental food, and very good sizzlers. It is a well-designed, popular place.
Blue Fox (249–7948), 55 Park St, has excellent Indian and Continental food. It is a famous, well-decorated place.
Silver Grill, 18E Park St, serves good Chinese food. Main dishes are around Rs 50.
In the Park Hotel, the Zen Restaurant serves Chinese, Indonesian, and Thai specialties. The Atrium, in the Park Hotel, is a good Mexican place.
Flury’s, 18 Park St, has baked goods and sweets. Open 6.30 am to 8 pm.

Central Calcutta
Tulika’s Ice Cream Parlor, Russell St, next to the post office, has a good selection of ice cream.
Kebab-e-Que at the Astor Hotel, Shakespeare Sarani, is in a nice garden and is known to be one of the best places in town. It is very popular.
KC Das, Lenin Sarani, near the corner of Bentinck St, is known for its Bengali sweet.
Mission Cafe, Ganesh Chandra Ave, across from the Broadway Hotel, has good dosas and snacks.
Haldiram Bhujiawala, AJC Bose Rd, next to the Aeroflot Office, near the corner of Chowringhee Lane, is a popular snack and sweet shop.
Ganguram, 46 JL Nehru Rd, near the Victoria Memorial, is a famous sweet shop. They also have a branch at 159 Vivekananda Rd.

South Calcutta
Twinkle Fung Shway, 1/1 Dover Lane, is a popular Thai restaurant.
Garden Cafe, Alipore Rd, has good pizza, South Indian, and Chinese food.
Chinoiserie at the Taj Bengal Hotel is an excellent Chinese place. Sonorgaon, also in the Taj, has good Indian dishes. It is decorated like a rural home, complete with a courtyard and well.
Aheli, at the Quality Inn, JL Nehru Rd, has very good traditional Bengali food. It is a popular place.

Where to Eat—Other Areas
Suruchi, near the Mallik Bazaar bus stop, 89 Elliot Rd, specializes in authentic Bengali food. Recommended.
Amber (248–6520, 248–3018), 11 Waterloo St, near the Great Eastern Hotel, is one of the best places in town with an Indian and Continental cuisine. Main dishes are around Rs 50. It is best to reserve a table in advance because it is so popular.
Close by, the Sagar Restaurant, under the same management, is also very good.
Scoop, 71 Strand Rd, Man-o-War Jetty, on the riverside, serves pizza and good ice cream.
Eau Chew, P–32 Mission Row Extension, Ganesh Candra Ave, is a good Chinese place.
La Bucheto Pizzeria and Snack Bar, 5 Old Court House St, just north of the Great Eastern Hotel and American Express, makes good pizzas. It has fast foods and good service.
Chung Wah Chinese Restaurant, 13 Chittaranjan, near BBD Bagh, has main dishes for around Rs 50. Popular.
Indian Coffee House, 15 Bankim Chatterjee St, near Calcutta University, is a famous place where students and intellectuals congregate. There is another branch on Chittaranjan Ave,
Pemyangtse, 1 Mehar Ali Rd, has good Tibetan food.

Where to Eat— Vegetarian
Hare Krishna Bakery (247-3757), 6 Russel Street, two blocks west of the US consulate, is a small place that serves excellent baked goods, including pizza, cakes, and mango milkshakes. The Calcutta ISKCON Temple runs it, so everything is prasada (spiritual). Open 10.30 am to 8.30 pm.
Kamala Vilas, near the Metro Cinema, off Chowringhee Rd, has good, cheap South Indian food.
Junior Brothers, above Gupta Confectionery at 18B Park St, is a good cheap Indian place. It serves large thalis, which are a good value.
Vineet (440-788), 1 Shakespeare Sarani, across from the ITDC tourist office, in the basement of the Air-Conditioned Market, is an expensive, first-class place.
Anand Restaurant, 19 Chittaranjan Ave, is one of the best restaurants in town. It is a higher-class South Indian place and is popular. In the evening you may have to wait a half-hour for seating.
Jyoti Vihar, a few buildings down from the US Embassy on Ho Chi Minh Sarani, is a South Indian snack place.
Friends Home, on a side road next to New Market, is a snack and juice place that is popular with the locals. It serves good dosas.
Vicky’s, Lindsay St, has good South Indian food and is a good value.
Ideal Vegetarian Refreshment, 26/4 Hindustan Park Rd, serves South Indian food and is open from 11 am to 9 pm.
