Kathmanud Tourist Offices & Information

There is a government tourist office (220-818), on Ganga Path (New Road), across from Basantapur Square (open Sunday to Thursday, 10 am to 6 pm, and Friday, 10 am to 3 pm). There is a tourist counter (470-537) at the Tribhuvan International Airport. The airport tourist office usually has a selection of maps and brochures. They give out a free map of Kathmandu. The government Tourist Service Centre (247-041), on Bhrikutimandap Marg, east Tundikhel, is not very useful

The best sources of current trekking information are the Trekkers’ Information Centre (run by Kathmandu Environment Education Project – KEEP) (259-275; email: tours@keep.wlink.com.np), Jyatha Road in Thamel, and the Trekkers Information Centre (Himalayan Rescue Association) (262-746; email: hra@aidpost.mos.com.np), opposite Shree Guest House, Jyatha Road in Thamel. Both have comment books that contain tips from past trekkers and each has a small library. They both have notice boards, which are useful for finding trekking partners and finding used equipment. They are open from Sunday to Friday, 10 am to 5 pm. KEEP refills mineral water for Rs 10 per litre.
There are several good notice boards in the Thamel area with information on yoga courses, trekking partners, apartments, cultural events and language courses. There are good boards at the Kathmandu Guest House, Fire & Ice Restaurant, and Pumpernickel Bakery.

There are regular slide shows in the Kathmandu Guest House, often on independent trekking.
Two good free magazines are Nepal Traveler and The Valley Bulletin that have travel information and festivals. They can be gotten at the airport, some hotels and travel agencies.
