Kathmandu Hotels
and Guesthouses
Hotel
prices in Kathmandu are a bit higher than the same hotels in India.
This section divides the hotels into lower, middle and higher. Lower
price rooms range from $2 (Rs 120) to $10 (Rs 600). Middle rooms range
from $10 (Rs 600) to $40 (Rs 2400). Higher rooms go from $40 to $160
or more. Often hotel have both lower and middle range, or middle and
higher range rooms. If a hotel has rooms in two categories, then it
will usually be placed in the lower category.
The Thamel area is the happening place to stay in Kathmandu.
It is full of budget and good middle class hotels. It is a good size
area, north of the center of town and Durbar Square. In this area
are many good restaurants, shops, bookshops and travel agencies.
Another area is the Freak Street area, which is located
in an atmospheric area just south of Durbar square. It only has really
basic places.
Most higher priced hotels quote their rates in US dollars and only
except payment in foreign currency, by travelers’ cheque, credit
card, or Nepali rupees, with an Encashment Receipt. Middle and higher
priced hotels all charge a luxury tax which is between 10% and 15%,
depending on the star rating of the hotel. Budget hotel usually quotes
their room rates in rupees, often do not charge a tax or ask for an
encashment certificate.
As many hotels have new additions and are constantly redoing their
places it is a good idea to ask to see a few different rooms in a
hotel, as there can be a big different between rooms in the same hotel.
One may be very gloomy and another very agreeable. If you plan to
stay for while it pays to check out several hotels.
There are no shortage of touts (hotel commission agents
often taxi drivers) at the airport and bus station to greet you when
you arrive. They may get as much as 50% or more of the price of the
room for bringing you to the hotel of their choice. This commission
will be added onto your bill, so avoid them, if you can. If you ask
to go to a hotel, you often will be told the place is closed or totally
full. You can always take a taxi to a restaurant in Thamel, ask to
leave your bags there, and then go find a room from there. A Taxi
from the airport to the Thamel area is around Rs 250 ($4).
The busy months of the year are October, November, February,
March and April. Outside of the peak seasons prices are negotiable
and you can sometimes get a 50% discount. Many hotels offered me a
40% or 50% discount off their quoted price in August. To get a discount
you have to first act like you are not really interested and then
wait for them to offer a discount to you as you are leaving. If no
discount is offered, you can also just ask for a discount.
At the airport as you come out of customs there is a
hotel reservation counter. They represent mainly middle and high-end
hotels, but there are also some hotels for $10. Rooms facing the sun
or facing south are good during the winter, which makes them warmer.
The top floor rooms often have good views, which makes them preferable.
When directions are given for the places in the Thamel
area, often they will be given in reference to the Kathmandu Guest
House. Prices listed in this section are for the high season.
Where to Stay Lower
Often even the cheapest places have hot water, but it is usually solar
heated and therefore only hot in the afternoon. Budget hotels do not
usually have heating, which is highly appreciated during the cold
winter months.
