Needed Equipment for Nepal Trekking

It is always best to bring your own equipment as you will know it is a standard quality and also that it fits properly (boots).

You may want to rent equipment in Nepal to avoid having to carry it around after a trek. There are a good selection of rental shops in Kathmandu and a decent selection in Pokhara. You can rent equipment in Namche if doing the trek to Everest. . Most of the time equipment is a good quality. You should check equipment carefully and make sure the zippers work. You will often be asked to give a large deposit. You should never leave your passport as a deposit.

Many items can be purchased from trekking shops in Nepal. Sometime the equipment is used or it may also be exported new from overseas. Much equipment is being manufactured in Kathmandu such as: sleeping bags, back packs, down jackets, ponchos and duffel bags, are sold in the Thamel trekking offices. Much of the equipment is durable and is worth buying, but they will often have top name labels on them such as North Face or Gore-Tex, even though they are not made by these companies.

During the monsoon leeches will be a problem and it is good idea to have salt, a lighters or matches to deal with them.

A three-season bag is good for a low level trek (below 4000m). In the winter or above 4000m you should have a four-season bag and maybe a liner.

It is a good idea to have a large plastic bag to put around your backpack in case it rains.
