Other Treks in Nepal

Most people go trekking in the six main treks listed above. There are several other places to trek, but not many people trek in these areas.

Mustang
This area has only recently been opened. It is a high-altitude dry in the Tibetan plateau. It is northwest of Kagbeni, the furthest point west on the Jomsom trek.

You can only trek in this area as part of an organized group. A permit is $700 for 10 days and it is $70 for each additional day.

Dolpo
This region is northwest of the Kali Gandaki valley. This area has been open for trekking since 1989. You have to be well organized and have your own equipment. You get to this area from Pokhara is a hard 14-day trek to Phoksundo Lake. From there you enter the “inner Dolpa” area, where the Shey Gompa is located.
You need to have $700 permit to trek in this area.

Kanchenjunga Base Camps
This trek goes to the North and South bas camps in the extreme northeast border of Nepal. This trek must be done with an authorized travel agency. The trek begins at Basantapur or Taplejung, which is reached by road or from Tumlingtar or Taplejung by air.

Rara Lake
This trek last for eight days going from Jumla to Rara Lake. Not many people do this trek because it is difficult to arrange. There can be a problem getting flights or finding porters.

Solu Khumbu to Hile
The Everest base camp can be extended by walking 10 days east and then going south to Hile. This trek can be done instead of returning to Lukla and then flying back to Kathmandu or walking back to Jiri. From Hile you can go by bus or taxi to Biratnagar. From there you can get a flight or bus to Kathmandu.

Makalu Base Camp
This long, interesting trek goes along the Arun River to the Makalu base camp in eastern Nepal. It begins at either Hile or Tumlingtar. The trek goes through the Makalu-Barun National Park.
